Dr. Laura Morana

Interim Superintendent

Elizabeth Mickles

Secretary to the Superintendent

Superintendent Communications

I am honored to be stepping in as the Interim Superintendent in the Long Hill Township

School District. I would like to begin by commending the District’s response to an

unprecedented task of preparing to open the doors of the schools to the wonderful PreK-

8 students, while taking every precaution to protect them, teachers, staff, administrators

and members of the larger school community during COVID-19, global pandemic. I am

thrilled to be in a position to support the advancement of the goals set forth by the District

Board of Education while it seeks to identify a permanent Superintendent.

I have been fortunate to have been in leadership roles that included teaching, LDT-C,

supervisor of special education, middle school principal, director of staff development,

assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction and superintendent in Red Bank for

seven and a half years. Additionally, I will forever cherish the opportunity I was afforded to

work for the New Jersey Department of Education. Most recently, I finished serving as

Interim Assistant Superintendent of Special Services in South Orange & Maplewood

School District. I remain committed to community service and enjoy listening to audiobooks

while taking a daily walk.

Also, I am pleased to share that my daughter is a teacher in the Seattle area and we speak

daily about the successes and challenges associated with the shift to a hybrid model of

instruction. During this unprecedented time, our passion for teaching and learning has

reached a new height as new approaches to meeting the diverse needs of all students are

identified, implemented and evaluated.

In my Interim Superintendent role, I am committed to learning more about the operation of

the district through a review of data, interaction with administrators and staff, visiting

classrooms and soliciting feedback from school community members. I was pleased to

see wonderful PreK-8 students and staff who are modeling flexibility or adaptability,

creativity and collaboration as they lead in-person and live stream teaching and learning.

Clearly, our schools or the learning environments have undergone a transformation and,

as a District, we are examining student enrollment in the hybrid and remote only options.

I can assure you that the administrative team is reviewing the implementation of the

reopening plan and identifying successes and areas in need of attention through the use

of a data-driven approach to decision making regarding the next phase.

We are in the process of updating the Reopening Plan and Q&A to share with our families

early next week. Questions raised during the September 21, 2020 Board Meeting and

inquiries from parents will be incorporated into these documents.

For Your Information:

This morning I participated in a meeting of the Long Hill Township’s COVID19 Task

Force. I was impressed with the collaborative and strategic work that led to the opening

of the schools on September 8, 2020 and the ongoing support through training of nurses

and administrators and the guidance and encouragement to adhere to social distancing

Back-to-School Night events are taking place in a format we are not accustomed to, yet

we are maximizing technology to connect with our families and to welcome the new

students and their families.

I am planning “listening sessions” to allow for feedback from our families. The schedule

will be made available next week.

I look forward to meeting you and communicating with you on a weekly basis. Thank you

for your advocacy and support.
